Jim’s Rant For The Day. I’ll Be Dead by Night.

Six months ago I purchased a CD of the Judds to go in my car for my 5 year old Grand-Daughter Tavy (Octavia). She loves to sing and I figured she could hear and learn their lyrics. Whenever we go any place she sings along with all the songs. When learning them she would have me stop them and ask about what phrases meant. She learned a lot about life and expressions. Now I am trying to expose her to other songs.

Believe it or not, I am the son of a son of a sailor man. I have always been in love with sailing ships and that culture. After watching the true movie, Fisherman’s Friends, I purchased their CD of sea shanties. This morning she heard the first song of What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor? She heard it twice before I dropped her off at kindergarten. I explained the history of the song and that it was a work song for the sailors to coordinate their work efforts as well as to humor them as they worked. I explained it would make people smile but I also said she shouldn’t sing a song like that so be careful.

When I picked her up she said she “couldn’t resist the song” and was singing it in school although I warned her not to. As soon as she got in the car she demanded I play it over and over on the way home. She said it makes her laugh when she sings it.

Her mother sends her to a Christian school. She’s going to kill me tonight!
