Jim’s Daily Rant. The Pig Principle.

Updated: Oct 24, 2024

Yesterday I worked at a Voting Precinct as a volunteer. Two of us acted as Deputies at the front door. We are not cops but rather greeters and enforcers of the state rules regarding election practices. Our job is to keep riff-raff like me out (imagine that).

In Florida no campaign signs can be placed within 75 feet of the front door. Voters are allowed in wearing political attire as long as they get out. All voters are to exit before hanging around and talking about the world. This forces the volunteers inside to act like a mean librarians admonishing; no fun to anyone.

Each political party can leave one Poll Watcher volunteer there all day to make sure election laws are not violated as well.

My fellow Deputy (Jim) and I are both extroverts. We became rodeo clowns cheering and joking those that entered. This hopefully motivated them to comeback to the entrance quickly for more kidding around. Man did Jim and I have fun, until . . . .

One voter noticed a car parked right at the front door that had been there all day. At it’s angle we could not see campaign posters taped to the Driver window and the driver side back window. Jim began managing the situation and I did not know what the signs said. As the car was about to be towed as it was in the sign barrier section, it was discovered it belonged to a poll watcher. She moved it and charges were to be filed against her. I later discovered she was a Democrat.

When I studied Tax Law, I read a famous case dubbed “The Pig Principle”. A gent had several corporations and posted 100% of all his expenses on each corporate tax return. Before sending the gent to prison, the Tax Judge said ”You can make money being a bull, a bear, a workhorse but not by being a pig.”

There are always gray areas in law. But that woman was well versed in state election law. She knew exactly what she was doing. She was truly being a despicable pig about it.
