I love the season of graduation ceremonies; to see our kids moving into adulthood and being honored for making it and having some honored in making their best steps forward. I am proud to see humanity overcoming shortcomings they may have and leaping past them as if they never existed.
I am reminded of an article that impressed on me the difficulty mutes unable to speak having to overcome their plight. There are hundreds of thousands of words commonly spoken and yet there are only ten fingers to express them all. It is amazing that a silent language was created that accomplishes this impossible talent.
I am reminded of an article I read about a famous mute man who was asked to speak at a high school graduation. I am sorry I do not recall his name. He was sitting on the stage with the Principal when she went up to the mic and introduced him to the students. He then went forward with his interpreter.
He used both hands and giggled his breasts. The Principal ran up and stopped him. The interpreter explained that was the sign for “Ladies”. She sat back down.
He then grabbed his private parts and again she stopped him. After being told it was the sign for “Gentlemen” she took her seat.
The speaker then grabbed his breasts, private parts and mimicked masturbating. As the principal fainted and slid out of her seat, the interpreter leaned into the mic and said “Ladies and Gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure . . . .”
