Here is what the ports have in common with the Battle Of New Orleans.
First lets start with the British battle plan. Their ships could only off load in a swamp area to attack the city. They could not move cannons in the swamp. Part of the army would cross the Mississippi river with all their cannons and move north to out flank the American citizens hiding behind their cotton bale wall. They would then shell them without receiving any return cannon fire.
The rest of the army would attack after a long march through the swamp. They would use ladders to scale the cotton walls and win the battle.
On the way to the office, the lead unit commander realized he forgot to order the men to carry the ladders. They had to rush back to camp then, with the ladders, got stuck in the rear of the marching troops.
On the way to the branch office, that commander learned how swift the river was and was swept 10 miles down river and never made it to the destination across from the cotton wall. He missed the battle.
Back at the main office, the lead British units hit the wall, without ladders being there, and got pushed forward by the troops behind them. It was a real slaughter. If memory is correct, only three Americans were killed.
This was the biggest disaster ever by the British army, so it was said. They sailed back to England.______________________________________
Now we learn that the battle was fought two weeks after a truce was agreed to by all. News of it had not reached America yet. I believe it was a year later that a formal Peace Treaty was signed, with concessions.
If the Battle of New Orleans was the first battle won by America, after the surrender, who do you suppose won the war after all other battles were lost by the US? What were the concessions?
This is all we were taught about the War of 1812.
